COVID-19 has killed more people in 2021 than in 2020, according to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
The disease was reported as the underlying cause of death or a contributing cause of death for 377,883 people in 2020, accounting for 11.3% of deaths, according to the CDC.
As of Monday, more than 392,000 people in the USA died from the coronavirus in 2021, according to Johns Hopkins University data. That's nearly 15,000 than last year – and there's still more than a month left.
New COVID-19 infections are on the rise in 38 states, and health officials are braced for the possibility of a surge in cases over the winter. Experts cite a combination of factors: the seasonality of the virus, waning immunity and many unvaccinated Americans.
