Power in the pen’: Carlos Bulosan captured the unjust treatment of Filipino immigrants and fought for labor rights through his poetry
As a writer and activist, Bulosan documented the racism and exploitation that awaited early Filipino immigrants at every turn, but his work has largely been overlooked because of his association with the labor movement.
"Bulosan saw America in all its beauty and all its faults," said Jose Antonio Vargas, a Filipino-American journalist and activist. "That’s the mindset we need to see more."
“We who know prejudice sometimes have a tendency to believe that we are the only ones discriminated against,” Bulosan wrote in 1937. “Then I remember that there are thousands of people besides Filipinos who have had similar experiences...And I began to feel less alone.”
And as our nation once again grapples with questions about race, workers’ rights, how history is taught and what it means to be an American, Bulosan’s work remains as relevant during the 1930’s as it does today.
