Millions of parents are eagerly awaiting the arrival of COVID-19 vaccines for elementary school children. Currently, only those 12 and older may get the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine. The Moderna and Johnson & Johnson vaccines are only available for adults.
The FDA is ready to begin evaluating vaccines for children as soon as data comes in, but getting it right takes time, the head of the effort says.
“If there's one thing that the pediatricians banged into my head, it’s that children are not little adults,” Dr. Peter Marks, who directs the FDA’s Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research, told USA TODAY.
