He made for one of 9/11’s most powerful images. The boy in the yellow raincoat, Kevin Villa, was grieving the loss of his mom, an EMT who died while responding to the World Trade Center’s South Tower on Sept. 11, 2001. His grandmother had asked if he had anything to say to his mother. Words failed. He leaned forward on the white casket, laid his head on gently folded arms, and wept. Two decades later, Villa continues to tell his story, his mom’s story, and how he has come to think about the woman who didn't come home that day. It's all still sad, he says, but it's comforting knowing that she made the decision to do what she did on 9/11, risking her life to help others. He is his mother's son, but he tries not to compare himself to her. "I can't jump that high," he says. "I can't climb that high." 📷: Stephen Schmitt, Rockland/Westchester Journal News
