Michael Arad (shown in second picture) had a vision for the 9/11 Memorial that was once a longshot. Now, ten years after it opened to the public, its blossomed into a piece of New York’s everyday fabric.
Its scale is massive and personal, and its impact is individual. The deep pool yields a "tangible" absence, he says, showing visitors what – and how much – was lost.
"When you walk up to the edge of that void, you feel it,” Arad says.
And he wants to know: have you been there at night? “It’s a different experience at night.”
