Kathy Hochul made history Tuesday as the first woman to serve as New York governor after now-former Gov. Andrew Cuomo officially stepped down at midnight.
Hochul, a 62-year-old Democrat, was sworn in as the state's 57th governor during a private ceremony at the state Capitol, where Janet DiFiore, the state's chief judge, administered the oath of office.
The overnight inauguration came just as Cuomo's resignation took effect at the stroke of midnight.
Along with becoming the first woman ever to serve in the role, Hochul will be the first governor in a century to hail from outside the New York City metropolitan area.
"The promise I make to all New Yorkers, right here and right now: I will fight like hell for you every single day, like I’ve always done and always will," Hochul said at a news conference Aug. 11, the day after Cuomo announced his resignation plan.
One of Hochul's biggest obstacles when she enters office will be combatting the surging delta variant of the coronavirus, which could have a huge impact on the economic recovery of women.
A longtime elected official, Hochul brings a wide breadth of state, local and federal experience to her new role.
