U.S. Capitol officer cleared in fatal shooting of Ashli Babbitt on Jan. 6
The U.S. Capitol police officer who fatally shot Ashli Babbitt during the Jan. 6 insurrection was cleared Monday following an internal review that concluded the action may have spared the lives of lawmakers and staffers who had barricaded themselves inside.
"The officer’s actions were consistent with the officer’s training and (U.S. Capitol Police) policies," the agency's inquiry found. The agency declined to identify the officer.
The report follows a separate decision in April by federal prosecutors who said criminal charges would not be pursued in the case.
For some who have supported the Capitol siege, Babbitt has been cast as a martyr to the conservative cause.
