Scores of students across the country returned to school this week amid a surge in COVID-19 cases driven by the delta variant. There were 93,824 child COVID-19 cases nationwide reported July 29 through Aug. 5, 15% of the total weekly reported cases, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics. In this week's Backstory, editor-in-chief Nicole Carroll details the facts and figures behind COVID and how it is impacting children, many of whom are still too young to be vaccinated. Experts don't know if kids are getting sicker with the delta variant, but they do know that this variant is more contagious, meaning more people, including kids who can't get vaccinated, are catching it, Carroll writes. The CDC recommends students and staff members wear masks indoors in school this fall, regardless of vaccination status. 📷: The Palm Beach Daily News, The Palm Beach Post, San Francisco Chronicle via AP #students #backtoschool #covid #pandemic
