Ron Popeil, the television marketer and inventor whose iconic infomercials made him a staple of pop culture, died Wednesday in Los Angeles. He was 86.
Popeil, whose father was also an inventor-salesman, made his first infomercial in 1959 for the Chop-o-Matic food cutter. Popeil went on to market hundreds of products on air, becoming a fixture of late-night TV.
His catchphrases – including "But wait! There’s more" and "less shipping and handling” – have become hallmarks of TV marketing.
Popeil was an inventor in his own right, creating products like Popeil’s Pasta Maker and Food Dehydrator and the Showtime "set it and forget it" Rotisserie, which grossed over $1 billion in domestic sales.
