"Let the people vote. Fight for justice," Ohio Democratic Rep. Joyce Beatty posted on Twitter after being arrested by Capitol Police, hands zip-tied behind her back, while participating in a voting rights demonstration Thursday.
Beatty, who is chair of the Congressional Black Caucus, marched alongside civil rights advocates at the Hart Senate Office Building near the Capitol to protest a push to pass new restrictions on voting in states across the country.
Prior to the demonstration, Beatty's office released a statement condemning "numerous voting restriction laws being passed in states across the country" and Senate Republicans' "refusal to engage meaningfully in drafting federal legislation to ensure that every American has equal opportunity to vote."
Capitol Police said in a statement on Twitter that nine people were arrested after being warned three times to stop "illegal demonstration activity."
