Rest in Power "Blue" Gene Tyranny, Robert Sheff, Joe Gantic. 1945-2020.
How else could "Blue" Gene Tyranny exist on this earth but peacfully? How else could he exit but peacefully? For me, Blue was a shining enigma of generosity and brilliance. Not just Leading a Double Life but a triple life, he was raised as an adopted child of the Sheffs, was so gifted musically that he was able to live his life in music as "Blue" Gene (blue from the Tyranny of genes), and was so deeply compassionate and intellectually and philosophically curious that the disovery of his birth name of Gantic became deeply important to his understanding of his own spirit. These threads of his personal mythology could easily weave into any five minute conversation with him.
As the first artist that I worked with closely for the record label, I remember calling him when his CDs arrived, reporting to him, shamefully, a small error had made its way into the final product. He never faltered in his optimism, and praised the imperfection as akin to the Japanese concept of wabi-sabi. I feel that every interaction with him since has been unfalteringly educational in the same way - never lacking focus or faith in the essential goodness of the work and the miraculuousness of each moment where it is made possible.
I am constantly amazed by the deep feelings of compassion for other people I see in people who spend time with Blue's music, and I’m honored to count myself among those whose life and worldview has been tangibly been improved because of it.
Love and thanks to you, Blue.
