Pod IV is alive and in good shape!
During our final run, we experienced an incident that made us lose some parts on the way. After further inspection of our pod and the data retrieved from the final run, we can now share the first analysis of our pod "exploding". First of all, the pod didn't explode! One of the propulsion modules derailed, most likely because of a misalignment of the rail segments. With the pod consequently running too low, some of the other modules were deformed and made one of the motors hit the shell.
The biggest impact occurred when one of the screws that hold the rail to the ground hit one of our brakes, ripping apart its bottom. With that, the pressurized brake lost all pressure instantly, which looked like an explosion. We designed our pod to be fail-safe. Because of that, the other brakes engaged and stopped the pod. After the run, the telemetry board delivered the health status of the pod to the ground station, which allowed us to safely retrieve the pod in a good condition.
As you can see on the photos the pod is alive and survived this incident. This is an unexpected but invaluable lesson learned. It made us understand how at high speeds every little detail counts. We will use these insights for future improvements.
