01. Fashion explained: For singer-songwriter shishani I developed a concept for the videoclip of there single “Forget To Remember” centering their roots and queer identity. Shishani mixed heritage: born in Namibia with a Namibian mother from the Ovambo tribe and a Belgum father. I focused on the traditional fashion of the Ovambo people before and after colonialism. I mixed it with daily modern European fashion. Because Shishani is non-binary it has been hard for them to connect with the traditional fashion from the Ovambo tribe with strict gender divisions. So I played with gender roles in the designes and styled as androgynous as I could without stepping too far away from what makes the tribe recognizable. Scroll to see more of the original Ovambo fashion. If there is a color that Shishani really didn’t like, it was pink. And especially fuchsia, but since this is the color of the modern Ovambo fashion they had no choice but to be open to embrace it.
