Yesterday a new Speaker, the Hon @jonathanodeamp was elected in the Legislative Assembly and was ceremonially ‘dragged’ to the chair. ⁣ ⁣ 🤔 Why? From the 16th century the Speaker of the House of Commons communicated decisions of the House to the King or Queen. This was sometimes dangerous and messages that upset the ruler could even lead to execution. This is why a Speaker ‘resists’ their appointment and is dragged to the chair by other Members⁣ ⁣ Today we keep the ceremony but have thankfully done away with the perils of the role #nswpol #parliament #nswparliament
