“Today marks the beginning of Hanukkah. The holiday begins at sundown today and is celebrated through December 26. We asked artist Alex Woz to create a piece that represented the holiday. Here's what Alex had to say about the holiday, "Hanukkah is often misinterpreted to be a flagship holiday for the Jewish people, but it has only earned its status because of its close proximity to Christmas. In reality, Hanukkah is a very minor holiday on the Jewish calendar- but that doesn't take away from the festivities and tradition that are deeply rooted in ancient spirit and history. Hanukkah is a holiday which commemorates a victory of the Jewish people over the Seleucid empire, who had overtaken the land of Israel, and promptly instilled laws which inherently banned Judaism.
A group of Jewish rebels called the Maccabees eventually rebelled against them, and were victorious- allowing the Jewish people greater autonomy to practice their sacred way of life under the foreign colonial rule. When the Maccabees re-entered the Temple in Jerusalem, their holiest site had been thrashed and defiled. When re-erecting the menorah, the miracle was that a jug of oil meant to last for one night ended up lasting for eight. Today, Jewish families everywhere celebrate Hanukkah as a means to honor our rebel ancestors who fought to maintain our traditions, even under hostile colonial rule. Hanukkah to me, is a way to connect with our ancestors and heed guidance from them to always be our authentic selves, and not allow antisemites to dictate our traditions for us."
