It’s not your fault. Read that again.
You feel guilty after eating, you hate the image in the mirror, you think you’ll never succeed or be good enough. When you eat you eat too much because you shouldn’t be eating it, or there might not be enough. You eat to feel. You eat to hide your feelings. You stay heavy to hide from the world, you stay heavy because who would you be if you’re not?
Know why you think all that?
Because that’s what you were TAUGHT, by people and by your experiences.
Maybe you weren’t fed on cue as a baby, or were only held at feeding time. Maybe you were given a cookie when you were sad, or had food withheld from you as punishment. Maybe you grew up with food insecurity. Maybe you were made fun of in school for being “fat” or you were immersed in “you can never be too rich or too thin” culture. Maybe you experienced trauma involving your body, or struggle with self esteem so it feels better to hide. . .
All these and more taught you how to have a relationship to food, your body, and your self. Whether well intentioned or not so much, you created beliefs based on these lessons.
And yet, you feel like it’s your fault you’re the way you’ve become or stay the way you are.
IT’S NOT. . .
. . . But now it’s your responsibility.
So you take it. You let the past GO. You replace those thoughts, beliefs and habits with new ones. You parent yourself. You become your best friend. You decide the truth of who you are and who you want to be, and you start LIVING that.
The past cannot be changed, only examined to show you how you got here. NOW is the only time that’s real, and it’s the time to take responsibility and start re-writing your story.
Every time you make a different choice in food, self talk, beliefs, and habits, with love and understanding that it’s not your fault, and that you’re re-learning better ways,
you write a new page.
