Five summers ago, I met a girl who was about to write and direct (and star and produce and music supervise and edit and) her first feature. And somehow, I had proven enough to this stranger to be given an incredible (and challenging) role as the antagonist to her protagonist. From the very start, I was astonished by her undeniable talent, her incredible drive in the face of difficulties, her ability to go above and beyond both on set and off—but what struck me hardest was her heart. I had never met a heart I liked so very much. A heart that I wanted to be around all the time, to try to absorb the goodness and love that radiated off of it at all times. A heart that seemed to somehow beat in the same rhythm as mine. A heart that could teach me how to love—a lesson that, until that moment, I had not quite been able to grasp. And by some act of universe kindness, five years ago today, she said she was willing to share that heart with me. I will never cease my gratitude for her. I will never not be in complete awe of all that she is and all that she will be. I will never stop loving the heart that has made me everything I am today.
