“Pádraig and I met at World Youth Day in Germany a month before I arrived at MIT in 2005. However, it was at MIT where we fell in love,” writes Grace Cantillon-Murphy SM '07 of her husband Pádraig Cantillon-Murphy SM '05, PhD '08.
“I graduated in 2007, and we married that summer in Paris, where I grew up. Our first son Philip was born in May 2008, two weeks before Pádraig's PhD commencement and ten days after his defense. After the ceremony, Professor Paul Gray invited us to his apartment. His wife wanted to see the baby! Pádraig had been Paul's 6.002 TA. We were chatting, and there was a knock on the door. It was Professor Charles Vest and his wife. So we spent the afternoon chatting and drinking tea with two of the most eminent leaders of MIT at that time. It was a great honor. However, what struck me the most was how the two couples were more interested in each other's families than in any professional achievements or accomplishments. It struck me that all our professional accomplishments pale in comparison to what we achieve as fathers and mothers.
“Today, we have eight children, aged between two and 14. I haven't worked as an engineer since we left Boston in 2010. Instead, I homeschool four of my children, while running the online homeschool program, Mater Dei Education. Our older children attend a small classical school, Mater Dei Academy, which Pádraig and I set up in Cork. It's our way of giving back for the education that we received at MIT!”
Pádraig Cantillon-Murphy SM '05, PhD '08 is celebrating his 15th reunion. Get together with friends and classmates for Tech Reunions, June 1-4, 2023.
