📷 1: Shan Cretin '68, PhD '75 taking her sister for a ride around the block on her 1959 BMW motorcycle, during the summer after graduation from MIT. “The BMW in the photo was my second motorcycle,” remembers Cretin. “I bought my first bike (a Honda 90) my junior year and moved up to the second-hand 500 cc BMW right after graduating. MIT Dean Kenneth R. Wadleigh wrote a letter to my parents in the summer of 1964 asking them for their assessment of my personality. He concluded the letter with a graphic warning about the ‘serious and heartbreaking experiences’ associated with ‘motor scooter and motor bike accidents’ and advised my parents to ‘be aware of the risks involved.’ I am not sure if this letter went out to all parents or only to the parents of the 50 or so entering coeds. In any case, my parents never mentioned it, and I only saw the letter many years later.”
📷 2: “Put on every year by the Walker Dining Hall staff, the Assembly Ball was a high spot for me—both planning for it and actually attending,” writes Shan Cretin '68, PhD '75, pictured front row in the middle. “I remember auditioning big bands, scouring Filene’s Basement for a marked-down evening gown, and late nights building props to turn the third floor gym into a scene from Alice in Wonderland.”
Among the members of the Assembly Ball Committee of 1967 pictured are (back row) Jim Just '68, SM '69, EE '70, ENG '70, PhD '73, SM '73; Al Currano ’68; Dick Scott ’68; Steve Osheroff ’69; Ned Crosby '67; and Paul Tarantino '67 shaking hands with Burns Woodward '67. Duncan Teague ‘68, Shan Cretin '68, PhD '75; Tony Trojanowski ’68; and Jack Shachat '68, SM '74 are seated.
