It’s Great Dome Pumpkin, MIT! Exactly 60 years ago yesterday, on Halloween night 1962, MIT’s Great Dome received a jack-o-lantern hacker makeover. Explained by a fraternity officer involved with the hack: “It seemed a humanitarian thing to do — make the “Great Pumpkin’ rise out of the pumpkin patch on Halloween so that the Linus’s of the world would not be disillusioned.” 30 years later in the fall of 1992, we got the just-as-great MIT Press Pumpkin. The building that housed the @mitpress was covered with scaffolding and an orange mesh tarp for a reconstruction project, and the construction crew “carved” their own jack-o-lantern with strips of black cloth.
