“Besides the Concert Band, I have fond memories of performing in a number of other musical groups at MIT, including the Brass Ensemble, Symphony Orchestra, Chamber Orchestra, Concert Choir, and in the pit orchestra for numerous MTG and Gilbert and Sullivan shows,” remembers Scott Berkenblit '86, SM '90, PhD '96, pictured at his 1986 graduation. He performed alongside local professional brass players at all three of his MIT graduation ceremonies. “Outings to Toscanini’s were certainly a highlight (with coconut chocolate chip as my favorite flavor), as well as many group meals at Bertucci’s, Royal East, and other inexpensive restaurants near campus. Late night runs to 20 Chimneys for ‘Cali Burgers’ were also a frequent occurrence. Exploring MIT’s interesting rooftops, tunnels, and ‘tombs’ was always diverting, and getting to the top of the Great Dome was particularly rewarding.” For his remarkable volunteer service to the Institute, Berkenblit will be honored with a Harold E. Lobdell ’17 Distinguished Service Award at this year’s MIT Alumni Leadership Conference. Meet dedicated MIT alumni volunteers like Berkenblit at ALC on 9.16–9.17.
