Winning in England “was a big deal,” remembers Schiller. The University of Southhampton was the reigning British champion at that time with Alan Dean aka “the Supreme Dean” as their star winker. “They just thought we didn’t know what we were doing, that we were just one of the colonies,” he said noting that Tiddlywinks had only been introduced in the United States 10 years prior. “The problem was we had been developing a little different strategy than they had. They were better than us technically, but we were a lot better than they were strategically, and we won handily. To this day, they are still upset about it.” Schiller was later a contestant on the television game show “To Tell The Truth” as the captain of the MIT team. For years, this photo was displayed as one of the key moments of the 1970s within MIT historical timelines at both the MIT Museum and the lobby of Building 10.

Prior to attending MIT, Tim Schiller had never played Tiddlywinks. Early on in his freshman year, “I was on my way downstairs in Burton to do my laundry,” Schiller remembers. The MIT Tiddlywinks team was meeting there, and I never got to my laundry.” Several months later in December 1968, Tim was the sole freshman among a team of seniors to win the North American Tiddlywinks Championship.
Tim Schiller ’72 is celebrating his 50th reunion. Today (5.18) is the last day to register for #TechReunion
