“We first met at a get-to-know-each-other activity for incoming MIT Media Lab students,” remembers Daniel Fitzgerald SM '17. “Everyone was instructed to teach a unique skill to someone else. I got randomly paired with Manisha and was supposed to teach her computer vision. Over the next few months, we hung out in the same group (the 3rd floor), but our relationship really started on Thanksgiving. I invited her and a handful of other international friends to my family’s house in western Massachusetts to experience the American holiday in the traditional way, but she was the only one that ended up coming.
“As soon as we walked in the door, my dog Maizy tried to greet her—in the usual canine way. Raised in India, Manisha had a habitual fear of dogs, and hid behind me. Fortunately, Maizy is the nicest dog ever, and they quickly became friends. Manisha and I became more than friends soon after.
“That summer, she brought me to India to meet her family and show me their traditions. At MIT, we did many projects, courses, and hackathons together (and some publications), and after graduating we’ve continued going on adventures and sharing cultures. We were formally married on Thanksgiving 2019 in Springfield MA, then had an authentic Indian wedding at her home city, Chandigarh, in January 2020. We continue to work on projects together and brainstorm ‘anti-disciplinary’ ideas that only Media Lab alumni would understand. I haven’t taught her computer vision yet—we’re still getting to know each other.” 💕
