Did you realize many of New England’s dancers are getting a lift from…packaging foam? Peter Colao ’89, MArch ’93 and Richard Wood of Massachusetts’ @Wooden_Kiwi_Productions have patented a sprung dance floor based on that unconventional material, and many local dance companies have installed them. “You want the floor to actually move, and that deflection gives you a little lift,” Colao explains of their invention. Achieving the perfect layout and density of the foam took a lot of trial and error. “We’d lay out foam and get a bunch of dancers to jump on it and ask, ‘How did you like that?’ Then go back and try it again.
