Neri Oxman PhD '10 of MIT's Mediated Matter Group has extracted melanin from mushrooms, bird feathers, and cuttlefish ink, to create breathtaking sculptures. Called "Totems," the project "is rooted in admiration and respect of and for all things alive materially and immaterially—and for the wisdom of the Ojibwe people, who coined the word, as well as other First Nation peoples, who, unlike us, saw and felt and connected with this synergy," Oxman tells Fast Company.
