When Mareena Robinson-Snowden PhD ’17 graduated from #MIT, she became the first self-identified American black woman to graduate with a PhD in nuclear engineering from the Institute.
Of this first, she commented, “I may be the first, but we talk as if black and brown people and women have not been contributing to these fields since the beginning. That’s just not true. “For me it’s about uncovering the way we have shaped these spaces since their inception—not just talking about what’s happening now, but paying homage and honor to the women and the black and brown people that came before us. It’s not that they weren’t there, it’s that they weren’t acknowledged.” Read Robinson-Snowden’s full story: http://bit.ly/2J08KSN (link also in bio)
