The Association of Women Students in 1893. Ellen Swallow Richards was the first woman admitted to MIT as a special student. MIT began formally admitting women in 1882, but women accounted for just one percent of the student population until World War II. Today, women make up 46% of the Institute’s undergraduate student population and 35% of graduate students. #tbt
