Last night we learned of the devastating news that we had suddenly lost our dear, longtime friend Sarah Becker. If my career and life as an adult were a tree, Sarah would be as much of the foundation of that trunk that these branches of my life have sprouted from than anyone else I could name. I met Sarah only a year or two into my job at @jimlee ’s Wildstorm Studios. We were both uprooted from the midwest, her from Kenosha Wisconson, me from Denver Colorado, both making our way in the strange world of comic books in San Diego in the early 90s. Sarah was the editor of my first comic book GEN13, but she was so much more than that. Sarah was like the cheer captain, always full of positive energy and joy. Sarah, myself and Merv Garretson, who also worked at Wildstorm, even rented a house together for a year near the beach in San Diego, and let me tell ya, there was never a dull moment. During this period she would often tell me about her friend Andy Hartnell from Kenosha and how well the two of us would get along because we both liked all the same nerdy pop culture references. Sure enough, the day came when she introduced us, and a friendship was quickly formed, and a new comic book project grew out of that fateful introduction called... ‘Danger Girl’! As Farris Bueller once said “Life moves pretty fast…” and it sure does! In the past couple of decades, I got real busy raising two daughters and trying to build up a successful set-owned business and it became really easy to get caught up with my own BS. But I can’t help thinking now that I wish I had maybe been a bit more proactive and checked in on my good friend from years ago a little more often. I’ll miss you, Sarah, you were really cool chick, and one of the loveliest people I’ve ever been fortunate to know. ❤️
