Welcome to Trivia Tuesday!
What is the name of Claremont’s local newspaper?
Claremont Courier
Claremont is fortunate to have a locally produced newspaper. The Claremont Courier (@claremontcourier ) reports events, provides records, covers local institutions, and it is a forum for policies and issues affecting Claremont residents.
The Claremont Courier has been in production for over 100 years. The first edition of the Claremont Courier was a full-sized, four-paged Wednesday weekly published by E.B. Young on September 16th, 1908.
In 1911, Tobias Larson purchased the Claremont Courier and was the first journalist to publish the paper. Tobias was succeeded by his son Stanley who took over as publisher in 1936 and his daughter, Lavinia, who wrote for the paper during the Larson years. Both Larson’s kept the full-size format but the paper expanded considerably and thoroughly followed the local Claremont scene.
In 1955, Martin Weinberger purchased the Claremont Courier and continued the policy of reporting on the local Claremont news. The size of the newspaper was changed to a tabloid and graphics, personal features, and photographs were emphasized. In 2007, Weinberger’s son Peter become owner and publisher.
When the Martin Weinberger took over the paper, every community between Pasadena and West San Bernardino County had its own local paper. Today the Claremont Courier and Chino Champion are the only two left with a paid circulation.
On May 23rd, 2020, the Claremont Courier was awarded the Cultural Heritage Award during Claremont Heritage’s 2020 Gala “Our Town Live” for over 100 years of documenting and celebrating the community’s rich artistic legacy and promoting the cultural vitality of the region.
