One of our ballot measures this year will be in Lincoln County. Brothels had been legal in Lincoln, starting in 1972, after the county voted to legalize it. There were two brothels on Highway 93 near the Clark/Lincoln border, near Coyote Springs: one was called Betty’s, the other was where @sherisbrothel was originally located.
But soon, religion and vice collided. A Baptist district attorney led a campaign to outlaw brothels. And in 1978, the county population voted to outlaw the two brothels in Lincoln by 64 percent. The vote to outlaw was spurred by two murders that had occurred at the brothels: a former owner being killed and left in a ditch and a cab driver being killed after picking up a customer.
The two brothel owners sued to overturn the vote, resulting in the Nevada Supreme Court case of Kuban v. McGimsey.
The picture on the second slide is the only remaining evidence that brothels ever existed in Lincoln.
ASN believes it can win a ballot measure to re-legalize brothels for a few reasons: (1) enough time has passed from the events of 1978 to now that other counties have proven that brothels work safely (2) Lyon County voted overwhelmingly to keep brothels legal in 2018. Although Lincoln is more religious than Lyon, we can’t imagine county views differing much from each other within Nevada. We don’t expect to get 80% of the vote. We only need 50% or a majority vote. (3) there is a “Mormon issue,” but Mormons only make up 45 percent of the county. We only need to convince the other 50 to 55 percent of the county to vote YES.
So if you live in Lincoln or know someone else who lives in Lincoln, have them vote YES in November.
