It was such an honor being invited to the state Capital for the Statehood Day Reception in celebration of the new state flag and seal! I got to meet many of the SERC members, graphic designers, government officials, and many other people who were integral in making this happen. It’s honestly beyond surreal to go from designing a flag alone in my room (before the official commission was even announced), to the day of the Statehood Reception. Seeing my flag flying not only for the first time out in the world, but atop the capital building is a moment I’ll never forget. And the overwhelming positivity and excitement from everyone in the Cities was so touching to see. I’ll cherish these memories for the rest of my life. Not only was our old flag unappreciated and ineffective, but its depiction of an indigenous man being driven off the land by a white settler symbolized to many the horrors of colonialism. It did not reflect our states current values or it’s people, and it was a change that was long overdue. It is my greatest hope that all Minnesotans -including those within our Tribal nations and indigenous communities- feel represented by the flag. It wasn’t just me who worked on the flag, but many hands who came together to make this happen. So a big thank you is due to many people: @mike.freiberg and Peter Fischer whose bill instigated this much needed change. The Secretary of State @stevesimonmn for the NASS Award, and all his work on the commission. @luisfitch, Anita Gaul, and the rest of the State Emblems Redesign Commission for all of their dedication and tireless work in making this happen. The graphic designers @tylermichaletz, @jenaemichaletz, and vexillologists @briancham1994 and Ted Kaye, All of who’s expertise refined my flag into the best version it could be. A fellow congratulations to @rossbruggink for designing a beautiful seal. And finally, to my family, friends, and every person who has supported me and the flag, thank you for the encouragement. 💙 (Photo credit [Photos 5 & 7]: Amanda Sche
