I tend to not talk about my personal life, but this happened last week - COOKIE THROWDOWN 2016. SEVENTEEN different kinds of chocolate chip cookies...
Story time - let's rewind a bit.
About 7 weeks ago, Jen Sinkler and her beautiful husband David Dellanave came to town. They posted about hanging out for a dinner, and I decided to join them.
...We happened to eat at Pizzeria Libretto, which is an absolutely delicious pizza joint. At this dinner, I met Kara (whose husband Rocco actually owns said Pizzeria Libretto!)
Chatting with Kara, she mentioned about how she really wanted to help other women be more healthy. I immediately thought of my friend Lavanya, who has a Masters in both Kinesiology and Public Health. I suggested that the three of us get together at my favorite cookie spot - Le Gourmand. I sold it as "the best chocolate chip cookie in Toronto, and that I had done my research." Those who have seen my before pic know what I'm talking about :)
All three of us met, and Kara and Lavanya hit it off. They both agreed that the chocolate chip cookies were indeed the best they had.
A week later, Kara had the audaciousness to post on my wall claiming she had found better cookies. I immediately scoffed, only for Kara to tag her friend Renée into the thread, who claimed she could make better cookies than either.
Obvious solution: have a cookie-off.
Renee took it to the next level, and created a Cookie Throwdown. People were invited, and the little cookie-off became a bit bigger.
Come game day, we expected 5-10 participants. We ended up with SEVENTEEN.
And they were interesting. We had one with cardamom. One with miso in it! Another with nutella. Yet another that was an oreo-stuffed cookie. And other intriguing combinations.
(If you want to see who won, check the comments)
What am I getting at?
I use #sollife in jest (verbally in life, not online), but it's a way of me recognizing "damn, life is interesting." I've had quite a few people who know me tell me that I tend to always have stuff happening around me.
The thing is - none of that is luck.
When Jen and Dave came, I was 3 weeks post-op from ACL reconstruction and meniscectomy. I was hobbled... hell, I couldn't even bend my knee 90 degrees without being in pain (and oh boy was I on painkillers). But I still made it a point to go out.
Subsequently, talking to Kara, I immediately thought of someone who could help her with what she wanted to accomplish (I met Lavanya at James Fell's book launch a few years ago... and it just turned out that she happens to be the sister of one of my really good friends!)
I took the time to invite both of them to Le Gourmand to revel in its deliciousness.
When Kara/Renee got on about the best cookie, I saw that as a chance to meet new people and have more cookies!
And finally, while Renee was the (fantastic) host, as "HEAD JUDGE" I helped the balloting and counting everyone's ballots to discern the champion.
That wasn't even our entire night. Earlier with some friends we had watched the Chiefs blow out the Texans. After the Cookie Throwdown, I met up with my friends Adriana and Gustaf. I mention them by name because it was these two I was visiting in Colombia 5 years ago when they planted the idea of Examine.com in my head.
I'm not one to post preachy posts about "carpe diem" or "rah rah get life by the balls" or #fitspo simplemindedness, but honestly - life is what you make of it. There are so many ways to do interesting and fun things... it's just on you to make it happen.
