As we celebrate RSN50 this year, we take a look back in history.
In 1992, the RSN celebrated our 25th anniversary. Back then, we needed new capabilities to protect our sea lines of communication. That was why Tuas Naval Base was built - to house our growing Navy.
Many innovations were introduced into the design of Tuas Naval Base so that we can do more with less. Smart design created wharfage two and a half times more than that in Brani Naval Base within a much smaller land... area. State-of-the-art innovations such as mechanical ramps for vehicles, an automatic storage and retrieval system, and a floating dock (which can lift ships of up to the size of a missile corvette to facilitate ship repairs and maintenance) were built to improve work efficiencies.
A time capsule was also laid during the foundation-laying ceremony of the then HQ Fleet Building at Tuas Naval Base in December that year. On Tuesday, our Chief of Navy RADM Lai Chung Han unveiled the artefacts from the time capsule, which included blueprints and aerial photos of the development of Tuas Naval Base.
