Message from the Commandant
I’m very pleased to advise that the judging panel for the Minister of Veterans Affairs Multi-media Competition has just met, and both the first and second place winners are NZCF personnel!
• Under Officer Emma Catto, No 17 (City of Christchurch) SQN, ATC...
• Corporal Sophia Wells, No 19 (Auckland) SQN, ATC
The competition was run to raise awareness of the 100th Anniversary of the Battle of Passchendaele, the topic being “How can we remember the Battle of Passchendaele?” Entries to the competiton could be presented an any form, including artistic representation; essay, diary or letters; music; poetry; short film; or interactive web feature.
The Battle of Passchendaele, as it became known, occurred on 12 October 1917. On that day, New Zealand suffered the greatest loss of life in one day in New Zealand history. The losses impacted every town and city in New Zealand.
As their prize, UO Catto and CPL Wells will join the New Zealand Youth Ambassador delegation to travel to Belgium later this year. This is in addition to WO1 Hayden Adams from Ashburton Cadet Unit and UO Amy Vallance from No 17 (City of Christchurch) SQN, ATC, who have been selected as the NZCF representatives already.
Lieutenant Colonel Grant Morris
Commandant NZCF
