Col. Steven P. Whitney, Director of SMC's Global Positioning Systems Directorate at Los Angeles Air Force Base in El Segundo, was the Memorial Day guest speaker at the City of Lawndale, California, May 29, 2017.

Presentation of the Colors and a 21-gun salute were led by Hawthorne High School's Navy Jr. ROTC unit, with raising of the U.S. flag by Boy Scout Troop 785. The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Cub Scout Pack 290.

Robert Pullen-Miles, the mayor of Lawndale, and other local city leaders spoke at the event, including Congresswoman Maxine Waters, who also paid tribute to military members who gave the ultimate sacrifice for their country and for the freedom of all Americans.
