It would have been any other day, any other birth, but today, Dona Lolay is about to bring forth a child, no ordinary child. She is the mother of the National Hero, Jose Rizal. As the Dominican Friar Padre Amado rambles on at the pulpit about how insolent and lazy the indios are, we hear the cries of a newborn babe, a child who even while in his mother's womb already bore the grief of the nation it would be born into. A child whom we will fondly get to know as Pepe (Jhiz Deocareza) In this first episode, the viewers will have a foretaste of the suffering of the Filipinos in the hands of the abusive Friars, the Creoles. We will experience the suffering and the eventual guillotining of the three martyrs known as GOMBURZA. Pepe's older brother, Paciano is full of spite. We will see how the Mercado family is affected, as well as the young Pepe. Is this where our hero’s consciousness begins? Is this where his desire to see justice and equality in the nation was sparked? We will see the human dynamics of the Mercado Family, between the people within and outside of their home. How is the marriage of the Mercados? Is Paciano a rebel like they write him off to be? Would we have seen something different this early in Pepe? The episode will then take us to Pepe in prison as he waits for his death. We will explore the thoughts that ran through his head. Memories start rushing in of his arrival at Calamba and the day he had to say goodbye to the town he had fallen in love with. Witness the life of our young hero. His joy, his strife, and what it was like to live in a land where freedom was taken from us.
