Kevin Spacey denies new allegations made in Channel 4 documentary

Kevin Spacey has denied new allegations of wrongdoing before the release of a Channel 4 documentary next week.

In an interview with Dan Wootton, the former GB News presenter, Spacey denied claims of inappropriate behaviour that were detailed in the documentary.

He confirmed the accusations were largely historic, dating back to 1976 — 48 years ago. While he accepted that he may have behaved inappropriately at times, he denied that this amounted to illegal conduct.

The actor was found not guilty of nine counts of sexual assault by four anonymous men at a criminal trial in London last year.

In the interview, which was shared on X/Twitter, Spacey told Wootton: “I take full responsibility for my past behaviour and my actions. But I cannot and will not take responsibility or apologise to anyone who’s made up stuff about me or exaggerated stories about me.

“I’ve never told someone that if they give me sexual favours, then I will help them out with their career, ever.”

He added: “I’ve clearly hooked up with, you know, some men who thought they might get ahead in their careers by having a relationship with me. But there was no conversation with me; it was all part of their plan, one that was always destined to fail because I wasn’t in on the deal.”

The two-part documentary Spacey Unmasked will be aired in the UK on May 6 and 7 and available to stream on Max in the US.

Ruari Cannon and Danny De Lillo, both English actors, are featured in the documentary and have since given interviews alleging Spacey’s inappropriate behaviour.

When speaking to Wootton, the actor admitted that he had made “clumsy passes” at someone who wasn’t interested in him romantically but denied any accusations of illegal behaviour.

He said: “Were there times when I would flirt with some of the people who were involved in those programmes who were in their twenties? Yes.

“Did I ever hook up with another actor? Yes. Did I make a clumsy pass at someone who wasn’t interested, as it turned out? Yes. That may not have been the best decision and it’s not one that I would do today. But it happened. It wasn’t illegal, and nor has it ever been alleged to have been illegal.”

In a statement, lawyers acting for Spacey said there was no public interest in being misinformed by the publication of “false and unverified allegations” that were “largely historic, dating as far back as almost 50 years ago”.

They added that he would “effectively have to face trial by the media in relation to new allegations without a chance to present his side of the case”.

In 2022, Spacey had a sexual assault lawsuit against him by the actor Anthony Rapp dismissed by a New York court. Rapp claimed that the actor touched him inappropriately at a party in 1986 when he was 14.

Spacey’s acting career has struggled since 2017 when he was first publicly accused of inappropriate behaviour by several men at the beginning of the #MeToo movement.

After the allegations came to light, the Spacey was fired from his role as Frank Underwood in the Netflix political drama House of Cards.
