"In general, we have to get ready for a long-term war because failing this we will not be able to fulfil our main and essential mandate, to realise our right to leave peacefully on this land," he explained.
According to Harutyunyan, the main aim of Nagorno-Karabakh Armed Forces is peace enforcement. The politician is sure that hostilities will end with the defeat of Azerbaijan, or at least the latter will not win.
Harutyunyan noted that this escalation also targets Iran, "I would like to announce that one of the addressees of this war, of these military operations is Iran itself because this war is directed towards Iran as well."
Fighting in the disputed region broke out on Sunday when Azeri and ethnic Armenian soldiers exchanged fire. It's been the heaviest clashes in the region since 2016 with dozens of casualties reported. Both sides blame each other for the escalation.
Earlier Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan pledged to stand by Azerbaijan in the conflict. The Nagorno-Karabakh region is internationally recognised as part of Azerbaijan but has an independent government led by a majority group of ethnic Armenians.
